It's Bandcamp Friday, which means it's time to open thy wallet! Need help figuring out what to purchase today? Below is a list of some recommended independent artists that deserve your ears and your support.

Noe's Picks

Slowness as the Vehicle III - Geng PTP
Genre: Mix, Drone Metal, Hip Hop, Trip Hop

Ever wanted to hear someone rap over Sunn O)))'s earth tremors? This is a super fun mix that alters its source materials into foggy and dubby manifestations, perfect for listening in the couch surrounded by a cloud of smoke. All proceeds go to scholarships for the artist’s (owner of the PTP label) sampling classes for people of the global majority (BIPOC)

20/20 MONKEY V.6.6.6 - CLAN DESTINE CLICK
Genre: Breakcore, Hardcore, Acid, Techno, Jungle, Speedcore

A gnarly collection of electronic music bangers. As delightful as drinking Monkey 47 gin but instead of botanicals it's infused with blood of netherdemons and select satanic herbs.

Realizing Requisites - Dalibor Cruz
Genre: Techno, Industrial, Experimental, Noise

Underground worm oscillations and throbbing mental pulsations. Dalibor's immaculate production and perverse creativity deliver one of the most unique and amazing dance records this year.

Mntu - Ushangvagush
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal

A powerful, vast, and beautiful record. Solidarity to the Miꞌkmaq people!

Execution Ground - Painkiller
Genre: Dark Ambient, Jazz, Noise, Grindcore

A masterpiece that fuses dark ambient, noisegrind and jazz into a fascinating vortex of darkness. Every musician excels here, creating hypnotic grooves and worlds of miasma and death. Legendary trio of Bill Laswell (Bass), John Zorn (Saxophone), and Mick Harris (Napalm Death’s Drummer)

Infierno Digital - Romeo Diablos
Genre: Reggaeton, Industrial, Post Punk, Electronic, Genre Non-Conforming

Romeo is onto something here. His mishmash of genres is provocative, catchy, funny, dark, angsty, and just fire. Go ahead and enter the digital hell!

Flow State - Zvrra
Genre - Techno, Atmospheric, Deep Techno

Engulfing deep techno to listen to in your dark room while playing videogames. Its gentle pace, great sense of momentum, and beautiful detail will make you get that new speedrun record.

Brandon's Picks

Everywhere at the End of Time - Caretaker
Genre: Ambient, Avant Garde, Electronic

Universally praised for its unique way of provoking empathy in the listener, Caretaker’s three year-spanning project about a person slowly succumbing to dementia is as profound as it is beautiful. It doesn’t feel cheap or exploitative, which could easily happen with something like this. It’s a journey through the mind of someone slowly losing their grip on reality. If you’ve ever had a loved one go through this as I have and you’re willing to give it a chance, it is sure to leave a mark on you.

Growth and Healing Through Bringing Others Down - Shake the Baby Til the Love Comes Out
Genre: Noise Rock, Math Rock, Instrumental

Frenetic, wild, energized flurries of distorted madness. Complex time signatures. Every guitar FX pedal on at once. These are a few of my favorite things. And I’m not alone in loving them as this band so clearly demonstrates. Ever so highly recommended.

A. Iwasa's Picks

Toma Conciencia (Ensayo) - Coraje
Genre:  youth crew

Peruvian vegan hardcore straight edge band from what I understand, playing in a perfect old school style, and vocalizing in Spanish.

The Early Four Track Recordings - of Montreal
Genre:  indie

While e-mailing back and forth about The Smiths and Johnny Marr and Morrisey’s subsequent solo careers, my friend Laura-Marie wrote, "sometimes the pop and clean appeals to me like in a band like of Montreal where they have a slick veneer but are talking about weird stuff and have a queer thing going on.  like there's a veneer of normal while they're doing something weird underneath--I like that."  Of course I had to look them up, and wow!  There must be something in the water in Athens, Georgia.  Something good.

I’m Free - King Tuff
Genre:  garage

A comrade who read one of my ‘zines told me if I loved T. Rex I should check out King Tuff, and I was not disappointed!

▶︎ I'm Free | King Tuff (bandcamp.com)

Two Birds - The Wanda Junes
Genre:  alt-country

The Wanda Junes are sort of the opposite of a lot of the country- influenced music I can get into. Nowadays they are mostly rock, but I like their earlier material a great deal.

▶︎ Two Birds | The Wanda Junes (bandcamp.com)

Wonder Under - Glad Rags
Genre:  psychedelic

I’ve only seen Glad Matt of the Glad Rags singing and playing piano solo, but I was sufficiently impressed to look up the whole band, and equally blown away by the layers everyone else adds to the music.

Parisa's Picks

Thrashmandu 3 2021 - Various Artists
Genre: Thrash metal

I first discovered this label, Eumsn, when Noé wrote about the Extreme Lockdown compilation on his year end list. It's a small, DIY label that focuses on extreme music from around the globe, and while the whole discography is great, I've been especially stoked on this thrash compilation. Nepal may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of thriving trash metal scenes, but it should be!

Mystery 秘神 -  Mong Tong 夢東
Genre: Psychedelic

A trio from Taipei creating sample-based psychedelic music. This new album is a "journey into Taiwanese folklore combined with the 80’s media obsession with the supernatural." The brothers in this band are also in a group called Prarie WWWW, a great experimental drone band fusing Taiwanese folk traditions - highly recommend!
