It's spooky season, which means it's time for pumpkin spice lattes, cozy fall sweaters, and of course, candlelit black masses to worship our hellish underlord, SATAN! For our October collaborative blog, the collective conjured up a Satanic Panic playlist paying homage to the big man downstairs, from blasphemous black metal to deep Delta blues and beyond.
Playlist curated by Andrej, Parisa and Alex.
T&E blogger Parisa on her pick "Faustian Echoes" - Agalloch:
Perhaps one of my favorite concept albums (or EPs, rather) comes from Agalloch's sonic interpretation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's play Faust. "Faustian Echoes" is a single twenty-one minute track that takes literal and interpretative inspiration from the tragedy, with the lyrics taken from the English translation as well as a selection of samples from Jan Svankmajer's 1994 film adaptation, to create a backbone for the song's storyline. Agalloch creates several distinct movements to interpret the mood of each major passage. ebbing and flowing from catastrophically tense black metal to more melodic, open passages, as we listen to our hero Faust debate on selling his soul to Mephistopheles. It's so beautifully executed and remains my favorite Agalloch song to date. For related content, check out our podcast that talks all about the devil's role in musical history here. From backmasking, artists who've sold their soul, the battle of church vs. rock 'n roll, and so much more!
