The Beauty of Emptiness: Korean Experimental duo dal:um discuss debut LP 'Similar & Different'10/23/2021 Interview by Parisa Eshrati Translations by Kim Oru from yellowbomb dal:um is a Seoul-based musical duo who challenges the sonic possibilities of Korea’s most well-known traditional string instruments: the gayageum and geomungo. In their debut LP, Similar & Different, dal:um create a dialogue between traditional and experimental practices for an etheral and otherworldly release. We caught up with the duo to discuss abstraction, experimentation, and the beauty of silence.
Interview by x “This is Tehran?”, a new compilation from 30M Records, introduces a diverse group of modern composers and independent musicians that are breathing new life into the traditional music of Iran. With tracks that span contemporary classical, experimental electronics, trip-hop, and jazz, these artists showcase the creative and cultural energy of Iran’s capital city. We spoke with seven artists featured on the “This is Tehran?” compilation to discuss the ever-evolving musical heritage of Iran, overcoming political pressure, and the true meaning of independent art. For Cyprus' Monsieur Doumani, darkness has been a means to explore a whole new dynamic to their music. While staying rooted in traditional Cypriot music, the band takes on a new experimental approach to create a conceptual portrait of the night on their latest release, Pissourin. We caught up vocalist and tzouras player Antonis Antoniou in an email interview to delve deep into the album's themes of darkness, and ultimately, how to find the light.
Interview by Parisa Eshrati Upon relocating from her hometown in Belgium to the woods of Oregon, multi-instrumentalist HULDER was able to harness her self-power and execute a fully realized vision for a one-woman black metal band. Through the ritualistic processes of connecting with nature and medieval Flemish traditions, HULDER's music offers a means to process the harsh realities of life through folklore and fantasy, all while staying rooted in a true, unfiltered black metal sound. In our interview, we discuss the workings behind the latest album, Godslastering: Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry, and what fans can look forward to in the future.
